A call to invent the school of tomorrow in Nièvre, but with the fear of a two-speed school

Un appel à inventer l’école de demain dans la Nièvre, mais avec la crainte d

Since the beginning of October, the educational teams of the National Education are invited to participate in the device “Our school, let’s do it together”. The goal is to bring out local initiatives to improve the success and well-being of students at school, and to reduce inequalities.

This approach is voluntary. Consultations will be organized in schools and will be managed by the directors.

They will aim to develop an innovative educational project, which will enrich the school or establishment project, by providing local responses.

An envelope of 500 million euros

No specifications are imposed. Once defined, the project may be financed within the framework of an educational support fund. An envelope of 500 million euros has been provided by the government for the next five years.

This system is open in time: it can be initiated at any time by the teams over the next five years.

“It may be interesting, but there, we can no longer hold on. That we already improve our working conditions”

But the unions are more than skeptical. At first they consider themselves tired, worn out. “It’s an additional heaviness when we already have a heavy workload. It happens like a hair in the soup when the vase is already overflowing, ”says Coralyse Mazotti of Snuipp-FSU. “Everyone is fed up with it. From year to year, we are constantly adding new things to do. It is perhaps interesting, but there, one does not hold any more. Let us already improve our working conditions, ”claims Florent Moulinet, at Unsa.

The representatives of the teaching staff consider the system redundant: “Class and establishment projects already exist. But the Academic Director tells us that it is something else. It must be ‘innovative’, something that has never been done”, reports Coralyse Mazotti. This term “innovation” is vague for trade unionists, who find that the project is not sufficiently framed. “We don’t really know what that means. And as usual, the projects will be sorted on criteria which are not objective”, analyzes Olivier Crouzet, for the Snes-FSU.

Five schools in Nièvre will find their teachers after a strong mobilization

In the first degree, they also regret the lack of time allocated to them.

“We have to work on this during our regular hours of service, which are already used for school councils, meetings with parents or with partners. We have no leeway. We wish we could be replaced. It is not in the evening, after class, that we will be effective, ”insists Coralyse Mazzotti.

“It’s yet another device, which will lead to nothing, or which will generalize something that already exists”

In the second degree, voluntary teachers will have two free days in the year for this device. “It’s borderline volunteering. And we are consulted on this project, peripheral to education, but at the same time, the ministry is deaf to our demands on the heart of our profession, such as shifting the specialty tests. It’s yet another device, which will lead to nothing, or which will generalize something that already exists, ”provides Olivier Crouzet, disillusioned.

Establishments in favored areas will be favored. If all the pupils do not have identical study conditions, we will have a two-speed school.

The main fear of the unions is above all that these projects “break” the equality between the schools of the Republic and are “an open door to unravel National Education”. “Some will have envelopes, others will not necessarily have the arguments for, therefore not the same budget. Cities will logically have more dynamic cultural partners than a village school. It is the death of the republican school, identical throughout the territory, ”fears Coralyse Mazzotti. “It’s a competition between establishments”, agrees Florent Moulinet. His colleague from Snes-FSU has the same opinion. “Establishments in favored areas will be favored. If all the pupils do not have identical study conditions, we will have a two-speed school. And teachers who have committed to a project, but who will not get an envelope, will be discouraged. This is not what will recreate the link between the profession and the ministry”.

When contacted, the Academic Director did not respond to our calls.
