The president of the special assize court announced on Wednesday September 14 that the video surveillance images of the evening of the attack in Nice, on July 14, 2016 on the Promenade des Anglais, will be well viewed during the trial, noted a journalist from franceinfo on site. This screening will take place on Thursday at the end of the morning.

The advisability of broadcasting all of these images was raised on the second day of the trial of the attack before the special assize court in Paris and which is broadcast in Nice. Before making his decision, the president wanted to watch them in a select committee on Tuesday. He felt that “the viewing of the seal [était] of such a nature as to enlighten the court on the course of the facts” as well as “on the number of victims”, which will make it possible to better assess which can be recognized as civil parties or not.

On the other hand, he warns that these are “Extremely violent images, especially for people who were present on the Promenade des Anglais or who have lost loved ones. There is no obligation to watch them. People who hesitate, I strongly advise them not to do so”. He specifies that viewing will be prohibited for minors, that fragile people can be accompanied by a loved one and that it is possible to leave the room at any time.

The video, which lasts 4 minutes and 17 seconds, follows the trajectory of the truck which drove into the crowd gathered to see the fireworks on the evening of the national holiday. They show, second after second, the murder of 86 people under the wheels of the vehicle, the sometimes serious injuries of 316 others and the panic fear of thousands of others.

The viewing of these images was the subject of many debates during the first week of the trial to know if it was really necessary to see them to establish the facts, when they are of immense violence. The lawyers for the civil parties have spoken in favor of the viewing. Defense lawyers fear that these images will weigh on the whole trial and on the fate of the defendants, who however, as established by the investigators, did not participate in the murderous project of Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel.
